The, Newport, News, Department, of, Parks, Recreation, and, Tourism, (also known as Newport News Parks) is the government agency responsible for maintaining city parks and other sites of interest to tourists and the general population within the city of Newport News, Virginia. It is under the authority of Assistant City Manager Neil Morgan. The Director of Newport News Parks is Michael Poplawski.

Newport News Parks is responsible for the maintenance of thirty-two city parks. The smallest is less than half an acre (2,000 m²). The largest, Newport News Park, is 8,065 acres (33 km²), the second-largest city park in the United States. The parks are scattered throughout the city, from Endview Plantation in the northern end of the city to King-Lincoln Park in the southern end near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. The parks offer a variety of services to visitors, ranging from traditional park services like camping and fishing to activities like archery and disc golf.

Historic sites
Newport News Parks maintains eight historic sites within the city. Four of these are located within parks.

Battle of Dam #1, located in Newport News Park
Battle of Lee's Mill, located in Lee's Mill Park
Congress and Cumberland Overlook, located in Christopher Newport Park
Monitor-Merrimac Overlook, located in Anderson Park
Skiffe's Creek Redoubt
Warwick Court House
Newport News Victory Arch
Young's Mill
All of these historic sites (with the exception of the Victory Arch) were significant during the Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War in 1862.

Five museums are run by the department:

Newport News Parks runs eight sports facilities and community centers in the city for use by city residents.

The department runs youth leagues for basketball, American football, soccer, indoor field hockey, and wrestling. Leagues are also run for adults in basketball, flag football, softball, table tennis, and volleyball.

The Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation is a department of the government of Oklahoma. Under the supervision of the Governor of Oklahoma, the Department is responsible for regulating Oklahoma's tourism industry and for promoting Oklahoma as a tourist destination. The Department is governed by the a nine-member Tourism and Recreation Commission, with the Governor appointing eight members and the Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma serving as the ninth member and chair of the Commission. The Commission then appoints an Executive Director to administer the Department.

The Department of Tourism and Recreation was created in 1972 during the term of Governor David Hall.


History
The Department began in 1931 when the Oklahoma Legislature appropriated $90,000 for the land on which Lake Murray is located. In the late 1930s, the United States Congress directed the United States Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction on several large reservoirs, primarily for flood control and water supply. In 1951, Lake Murray State Park also became the site for the first of seven state-owned resort lodges. Through the years, park, lodge, and tourism programs rested in the Planning and Resources Board, the Department of Commerce and Industry, and the Industrial Development and Park Department. In 1972 the Legislature created the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, now made up of six divisions.

The Department of Tourism (Filipino: Kagawaran ng Turismo), abbreviated as DOT, is the executive department of the Philippine government responsible for the regulation of the Philippine tourism industry and the promotion of the Philippines as a prime tourist destination.

Started as a private initiative to promote the Philippines as a major travel destination, the Philippine Tourist & Travel Association was organized in 1950, and in 1956, the Board of Travel and Tourist Industry was created by Philippine Congress, until in 1973, President Ferdinand Marcos created the cabinet-level Ministry of Tourism (MOT), the agency Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) and the Philippine Convention Bureau (PCB).

Then in 1986, under Executive Order Numbers 120 and 120-A signed by President Corazon Aquino, now the Department of Tourism was reorganized and the Philippine Convention Bureau was renamed as Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation. In 1998, the Department of Tourism was one of the main offices of the government that is responsible for the culmination of the centennial celebrations of Philippine Independence from Spain. In 2002, the Department of Tourism initiated one of its most successful tourism promotion project the Visit Philippines 2003 in spite of post 9-11 threats of terrorism under Secretary Richard J. Gordon.
